Waste management – Railway tunnel

Waste management – Railway tunnel

The start of a two week project in Liverpool to release existing standing ground water from old disused railway tunnels that were built in the 1880’s and abandoned in the 1960’s. The works involved civil works to initially improve access to allow confined space trained crews to safely enter the tunnels.

Due to restricted access the removal of over 80 ton of waste was completed manually by our 6 man high risk trained crew who specialise in these types of works, with the only assistance to the crews being from  our vacuumation units.

The confined space trained teams on completion of profiling the floor of the tunnel, located and cleaned existing drainage channels to restore flow, then constructed a new in-Situ concrete sump structure in very challenging conditions.

Our partners completed the job by completing all mechanical and electrical works,  installing 2 no. new pumps, cabling and all associated control units.

Another extremely complicated job delivered on time, safely and within budget for our client.
